Specifics: Be as specific as you can with your recommendations. For example if you’re suggesting partnering with meal home delivery sites, find out which ones are going to provide the most relevant info, at what cost if possible, and what the ideal partnership would look like for content and SEO purposes. Even provide contact information if you can.

If you think of your social networks as extensions of your own brand (which they are), they should be closely tied together. Anytime you have a new blog post on your website, share it on your social networks to get people heading to your website. Have a link to your website in your social network profiles and vice versa: use the social bar on your website to make your social networks are easily and directly accessible.

Thanks for bringing up this point - I agree Eric - competitive positioning can help you determine value that you bring to the table that your competitors dont.  I'm all for it.  Neilsen does some reports that provide awareness, likelihood to recommend, sentiment and other insightsfor your site/brand and your competitors. You can also pull some of that type of insight out of social listening platforms like NetBase, SM2, Radian6, Dow Jones, Nielsen, and so many others.  I've even done some hacked compeitove sentiment comprisons before using Search: searching for [brand or feature] + "like", "love", hate", "wish" etc. 
Take the 10 pillar topics you came up with in Step 1 and create a web page for each one that outlines the topic at a high level -- using the long-tail keywords you came up with for each cluster in Step 2. A pillar page on SEO, for example, can describe SEO in brief sections that introduce keyword research, image optimization, SEO strategy, and other subtopics as they are identified. Think of each pillar page as a table of contents, where you're briefing your readers on subtopics you'll elaborate on in blog posts.

Consider reaching out to the hosts of those shows if you think they’d be interested in featuring you on their podcast—and you can certainly expect to drive traffic to your blog as a nice side effect of being featured.

This way, when you do drive traffic, you know where that traffic is coming from. Otherwise, you're left in the dark. For example, if you do some content marketing on Quora.com or Medium.com, you could use the campaign source as simply Quora or Medium and the campaign medium as content_marketing and the term as the term you're working to rank for. Get the picture? Then, you'll see all the beautiful results directly in Google Analytics and you'll know specifically where your traffic came from.


Here’s a hint: During the process of writing a blog post outline for your upcoming article, take a moment to spot any opportunities for bigger bloggers or brands in your space that you can mention and start building a relationship with. By taking this approach of providing value to others in your space first, you can start building a community of influential people that grows in value over time—and will soon help drive traffic to your blog.

I have been trying to produce more content because I believed the lack of traffic was to the small amount of content, but after reading your blog post, i’m beginning to doubt wether or not this is quality content. I will definitely do more research on influencers on my niche, now I have to figure out how to get their attention with my kind of content.
In fact, you should be spending a lot of time figuring out what the best way is to promote your content—I try to live by the 80/20 rule. I spend 80% of my time distributing my content, or figuring out the best way to promote it, and only 20% on the actual writing. Obviously, the quality of the writing is important, but it doesn’t matter how good it is if you aren’t spending the time to get it out there.

My company has been working on a large link building project. We’ve already performed extensive keyword research and link analysis and now we’re considering executing an email outreach campaign. However, all the content we’ve created up until this point is geared more towards our target audience as opposed to the key influencers of our target audience. Do you think it would be worth it to try to build backlinks to our existing content or are we better off creating new content that directly appeals to the influencers of our target audience?


I know many bloggers that have had great success using Pinterest to drive traffic to their blogs. I’ve had a good measure of success on my Pinterest too. You’ll want to make sure you have good visuals to go with each blog post–infographics like I have here and here are great for this–and the most successful Pinterest bloggers recommend that you post at least 10 unique pins (images) for every new blog post you publish on your site if you hope to drive traffic to your website in a meaningful way.
Brian, great post as always! Question: Do you consider authority sites (industry portals) a form of “influencer marketing?” e.g. guest blogging, etc? In some niches there are not so many individuals who are influencers (outside of journalists) but there are sites that those in the industry respect.
